BEEYONDERS showcases the future of construction technology in Spain

Four years of innovation converged in Madrid on May 12th, as the BEEYONDERS consortium brought its breakthrough technologies to life at the final project event, hosted at ACCIONA's headquarters.

What unfolded was more than a typical demo day – it was a celebration of how robotics, AI, and automation are reshaping Europe’s construction sector.

On one side of the room, exoskeletons developed by IIT enabled visitors to experience firsthand how wearable technologies can reduce physical strain on workers. Nearby, smart safety suits from IIT and VTT, equipped with sensors, monitored vital signs in real time, while STAM presented smart monitoring systems designed to track workers’ movements in high-risk areas and enhance on-site safety. Autonomous drones from CATEC completed the showcase, demonstrating intelligent site surveillance in action.

Of course, not everything fits through a conference room door. A 20-tonne autonomous wheel loader? That stayed on video. But the presentations brought these heavy-hitters to life, showcasing how Tecnalia, Hidromek and ITA‘s autonomous vehicles are transforming earthmoving and road maintenance, while DTU‘s VR training simulations immerse workers in realistic hazard scenarios – all before stepping foot on a real construction site.

The maritime construction story deserved its moment, too. Holcim and SEABOOST showcased additive manufacturing developed in collaboration with COBOD for marine infrastructure, introducing biocompatible structures designed to support marine ecosystems – proof that BEEYONDERS’ innovation extends far beyond land-based projects.

Yet the event was not only about showcasing technology – it was also about questioning how innovation can shape a more inclusive industry. In a powerful panel discussion, ICONS, ITA and sister project InCUBE addressed gender inequality and barriers to inclusion in construction, drawing on insights from the newly released white paper by the Tech4EUconstruction cluster, “The Role of Innovative Technologies in Addressing Gender-Related Barriers in the Construction Sector“. The discussion underscored a crucial message: technological progress alone is not enough. Building a truly future-ready sector also requires investment in skills, inclusive workplace cultures, and organisational change.

This is what European funding programmes do best – they do not just support innovation, they create the conditions for systemic change. As Iñigo Lacunza, PTEC project manager and guest speaker at the event, highlighted, EU-funded projects like BEEYONDERS play a key role in bridging strategic vision and industrial implementation across multiple dimensions.

So what’s next? While the full impact will emerge over time, the foundations are already in place. Infraplan‘s extensive evaluations across pilot sites reveal how these technologies perform in real-world conditions, providing a clear roadmap for scaled adoption. Every pilot demonstrates the scalability potential – a transformation of the construction workflow that’s now visualised in our dedicated infographic.

A further key output from the event is the BEEYONDERS Final Handbook, distributed to participants, which brings together the project’s main results, insights, and recommendations for the sector.

For those who could not join us in Madrid, the full event recording is now available (Part 1 and Part 2) – capturing everything from the technology demonstrations to the panel insights. Because the reshaping of the European construction sector does not end here; this is just the beginning.
